German Police Says Border Crackdown Can Last for Short Time

(MENAFN) Germany's recent intensification of border enforcement can only be maintained for "a few more weeks," according to the national police union.

The organization has raised concerns over the growing burden on law enforcement personnel who are implementing the new directive.

This warning follows two weeks after the administration launched more rigid border regulations in an effort to limit the influx of individuals seeking asylum.

Andreas Rosskopf, head of the Federal Police and Customs division within the German Police Union, explained the situation, stating, “We can only manage this because duty rosters have been adjusted, training for the units is currently on hold, and the reduction of overtime has been halted.”

Rosskopf emphasized that the ongoing controls are not sustainable long-term and can only be upheld "for a few more weeks."

This policy shift marks a significant departure from Germany’s previous approach to immigration.

It is a cornerstone of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s campaign platform, reflecting his pledge to impose stricter immigration measures.

The decision indicates a firm stance on migration, aiming to reduce the number of entrants into the country.

On May 7, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt issued a directive halting asylum requests at all land borders, effectively undoing the open-border approach adopted by former Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2015.

The order allows for specific exemptions, including children, expectant mothers, and other individuals in vulnerable conditions.

To implement the measures, Germany is deploying an additional 3,000 officers to supplement the 11,000 already guarding its frontiers.
