Kremlin Warns of Potential German Tensions
His remarks followed a recent statement from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who announced that there are now “no more range restrictions” on the deployment of Western arms by Kiev against Russian military objectives.
Responding to this development, Peskov emphasized that if Merz’s claim proves accurate, it would represent "an escalation and a serious escalation," which, in his view, gravely damages ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the conflict peacefully.
He referenced the recent, rare occurrence of direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine — the first in approximately three years — as being potentially jeopardized by this shift.
Merz’s assertion that missiles supplied by countries including the UK, France, Germany, and the United States may now be utilized without geographic constraints raised both uncertainty and concern.
It was unclear whether he was outlining a new strategic direction or simply expressing support for Ukraine's military flexibility.
The statement also triggered unease within his own administration.
German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil clarified that no updated policy had been implemented regarding the allowable range of Ukrainian strikes involving German weapons, indicating that the guidelines remain consistent with those established by the previous leadership.
