German Chancellor Calls on Netanyahu to Permit Aid into Gaza
Kornelius explained, “He (Merz) expressed his hope for a speedy agreement on the release of the hostages and a ceasefire. At the same time, he emphasized the urgent need to immediately allow sufficient humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip and ensure its safe distribution to the civilian population.”
The statement also highlighted the chancellor’s reaffirmation of Germany’s commitment to a peaceful resolution, with Merz stressing that “The chancellor reiterated that the German government continues to view a negotiated two-state solution as the best opportunity to enable Israelis and Palestinians to live together peacefully.”
Both Merz and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul have recently adopted a firmer stance toward Israel, criticizing Tel Aviv for failing to uphold its commitment to providing supplies to Palestinian civilians via the Israeli-American aid corridor established on May 25.
Last week, Wadephul condemned Israel’s strategy in Gaza, describing the denial of food and medical aid to Palestinians as “unacceptable” and a breach of international humanitarian law.
At the WDR European Forum held in Berlin, Wadephul voiced Germany’s profound concern about Gaza’s humanitarian plight and detailed diplomatic initiatives underway to convince Israeli authorities to facilitate more aid deliveries to Palestinians.
Germany has traditionally stood as a strong ally of Israel, with its political leaders consistently underscoring the nation’s historical obligations toward Israel rooted in the atrocities committed against Jews during the Nazi era.
Nevertheless, the country’s current center-right coalition government has adopted a more critical approach in response to Israel’s renewed military actions in Gaza, its ongoing blockade restricting aid, and proposals from Israeli officials calling for Palestinian expulsions and land annexations.
