Germany sees increase in youth far-right crimes suspects in 2024

(MENAFN) The number of young people in Germany suspected of committing crimes motivated by far-right extremism has doubled within a year, according to recent reports.

Data provided by the center-right government of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, in response to a parliamentary inquiry from the opposition Greens, shows a consistent rise in right-wing extremist suspects since 2020. In 2024, the figure was twice as high as in 2023.

The most notable increase was seen among adolescents aged 14 to 17. Last year, authorities identified 3,854 suspects, compared to 1,785 in 2023, with nearly 90% of them being male in both years. A rise was also recorded among children aged 13 and under — of the 204 suspects, around one-quarter were girls.

The report further indicated that “right-wing politically motivated crime” also surged among individuals aged 24 and younger.

Officials noted that Germany now hosts “a large number of right-wing extremist youth groups and other organizations with links to minors and young people”, operating either independently or within broader networks. These groups are often associated with far-right political movements and parties such as Alternative for Germany (AfD), Heimat (formerly the NPD), and the Third Way, as well as with newer, violence-oriented nationalist youth circles.

In recent years, Germany has experienced a growing wave of racism and Islamophobia, fueled by the influence of far-right movements and parties like the AfD, which have capitalized on public anxiety over migration and the refugee crisis.
