Germany Posts 1.3 Surge in September Industrial Output
The increase overturned August’s 4.3% drop, falling short of market expectations of a 3% rise for September.
The rebound was largely driven by a robust recovery in the automotive sector, Germany’s largest industrial branch, which surged 12.3% after a 16.7% decline in August. Destatis attributed the sharp growth to prior annual plant closures for holidays and production changeovers.
The manufacture of computer, electronic, and optical products also contributed to the rebound, climbing 5.1% in September. In contrast, machinery and equipment production fell 1.1% over the same period.
Excluding energy and construction, industrial output contracted 1.9% month-on-month in September.
"Within industry, increases were reported in all three major groups. The production of capital goods rose by 3.8% and that of both consumer and intermediate goods by 0.2%. Outside industry, energy production was up 1.3%, while production in construction declined by 0.9%," Destatis noted.
Compared with September 2024, production in industry excluding energy and construction was down 1.2%, while Germany’s overall industrial output fell 1% on an annual basis.
