German soldiers finish mission in Greenland

(MENAFN) Germany’s initial deployment of 15 troops to Greenland has concluded, according to German Armed Forces spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Milevchuk, who described cooperation with Danish forces as “positive and constructive,” as stated by reports.

The deployment was part of a larger European military exercise announced by Denmark on Wednesday, with participating countries including Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, and the UK, each sending between one and 15 personnel. Milevchuk noted that “the results of the reconnaissance will be analyzed in the coming days” and confirmed that the German team had completed its mission.

The exercise follows diplomatic tensions between Denmark, Greenland, and the US, which reached a so-called “fundamental disagreement” under the Trump administration over control of the autonomous territory.

In recent weeks, US President Donald Trump intensified efforts to acquire Greenland, arguing that US control is necessary to counter Chinese and Russian influence in the Arctic—a claim rejected by both Beijing and Moscow. Trump has also criticized Denmark’s military presence on the island, mocking it as inadequate and joking that Greenland is defended by only “two dog sleds.”

Tensions escalated further when Trump announced additional tariffs on countries that do not support the proposed acquisition. European leaders reacted strongly: French President Emmanuel Macron called the tariff threats unacceptable and promised a “united and coordinated” response; EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that the measures would damage transatlantic relations while reaffirming EU solidarity with Denmark and Greenland; and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the tariffs as “completely wrong,” emphasizing their negative impact on NATO and committing to direct talks with the US, according to reports.
