Syrian President delays planned visit to Germany

(MENAFN) Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has postponed his planned visit to Germany, which was scheduled for January 19–20, citing domestic political developments, according to a German government spokesman. The visit had included meetings with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, as well as a roundtable with business leaders.

The postponement comes shortly after the Syrian government launched a military operation to reclaim areas in eastern and northeastern Syria, following repeated violations by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) of prior agreements. On Sunday, Sharaa announced a comprehensive ceasefire and full integration deal with the SDF, requiring all their military formations to withdraw east of the Euphrates River.
