Survey Shows Growing Number of Germans View US as Threat to Global Peace
The poll, conducted in January by the Allensbach Institute for the Center for Strategy and Higher Leadership, found that 65% of respondents listed the US among the nations posing the greatest danger to global stability.
The findings reveal a sharp decline in Germany’s perception of the US since Donald Trump began his second presidential term in January 2025. In 2024, only 24% of Germans viewed the US as a threat, a figure that rose to 46% in 2025 before reaching the current level.
The survey also highlighted growing doubts among Germans about American commitments to NATO. Only around one-third (32%) of participants believed the US would provide military support if Europe were attacked, while 35% doubted it and 33% remained unsure.
Despite these concerns regarding Washington, Russia continues to be seen as the primary threat to global security, with roughly 81% of respondents identifying it as dangerous. China followed, with 46% of Germans viewing it as a risk to world peace and stability.
The representative survey was conducted from January 6 to 19, interviewing approximately 1,100 Germans.
