Germany Plans Naval Deployment to Mediterranean
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on Saturday that a minesweeper and a command-and-supply vessel will be deployed to ensure rapid readiness if Germany’s parliament authorizes participation in such an operation, as stated by reports.
He did not provide a timeline for when the ships would set sail.
Pistorius also indicated that an expanded mandate for the European Union naval mission Operation Aspides could serve as a legal framework for the potential operation. However, he noted that such an adjustment would require broader international involvement, including cooperation from both the United States and the United Kingdom, according to reports.
Under the proposed framework, Germany would contribute mine-clearing capabilities aimed at supporting safe maritime navigation in the strategic waterway.
The developments come amid ongoing tensions in the region following conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran beginning in late February, after which Iran increased control over the Strait of Hormuz, followed by a US naval presence in the area in mid-April, according to reports.
