Germany Urges Israel, Iran to De-escalate, Back Diplomacy

(MENAFN) Germany on Monday threw its weight behind a diplomatic resolution to the Israel-Iran conflict, calling on both sides to step back from the military brink as hostilities flared anew following a tense weekend of strikes and counter-strikes.

Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius delivered Berlin's position directly at a news briefing, urging all parties to pursue dialogue over confrontation.

"To de-escalate and advance diplomatic solutions, which have, after all, been under negotiation for quite some time now. That is the German government's position," Kornelius told reporters.

He further reaffirmed Berlin's backing for ongoing American diplomatic efforts, reiterating Germany's "support for the US president's efforts to reach an agreement" with Iran.

The appeal came as the region absorbed the aftershocks of a fresh escalation that erupted Sunday, when Israel struck the Lebanese capital Beirut despite an active ceasefire — triggering a retaliatory missile barrage from Iran targeting northern Israel. Israel responded in turn with multiple waves of airstrikes against Iranian territory.

The broader crisis traces back to late February, when coordinated US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran set off a sustained cycle of Iranian retaliation against Israel and regional countries hosting American military assets. A ceasefire reached on April 8 briefly halted the violence before collapsing under disputed implementation terms and compounding regional developments.
